The Federal Ammunition Company has been around since 1922. Today, they're owned by the ATK parent company, along with Speer and other companies that produce high quality, American made ammo. The Federal Champion line is reserved for value priced target and range ammo.
And for this review, we shot some of the champion .22 long rifle loads. This huge 500 round box is divided into 10 smaller boxes of 50 rounds each for easy storage and transportation. The 40 grain lead round nosed bullet is covered in a thin coat of wax for lubrication. Out of a rifle barrel, these high velocity rounds travel at around 1,240 feet per second. This type of .22 long rifle ammo is ideal for reliably cycling in semiautomatic actions.
We tried out this batch in six different guns, three rifles and three pistols. We had a few feeding issues here and there, but overall, it was a lot more reliable than what I've come to expect from many other lead nose. bullets. Our Glock .22 conversion kit in particular had some problems, but the manufacturer recommends that you only use plated ammo, so that's to be expected. On the other hand, the Smith & Wesson 15-22 AR style carbine flew right through the 25 round magazines of this ammo with no problems.
We used a stocked Marlin 795 with a 4 power scope to check out what this ammo could do from the bench at 50 yards. We got a decent group that measured a little over a an inch across. For a value priced bulk ammo, that's not bad at all. It seems like every .22 caliber gun has brands of ammo that it likes, and some it just doesn't cooperate with. With our six test guns, we had overall positive results. The high velocity rounds and consistent quality control of Federal Champion might make it a good choice for your favorite planking gun.
