The TruBall Deep Penetrator slug’s name denotes two important features. First is its unique wad system, which includes a plastic ball fitted into the hollow base of the slug. It helps the projectile align perfectly with the bore, and accounts for this shell’s wild accuracy: 1.4-inch groups at 50 yards, so sayeth the manufacturer. The “Deep Penetrator” in its name is a nod to the lead slug’s high antimony content. The added antimony makes the slug harder, which in turn helps it penetrate deeply enough to easily KO rugged bears and hogs.
Federal measured this shell’s 1,350 fps muzzle velocity and 0.079 G1 ballistic coefficient using a 30-inch test barrel. Those numbers allow us to project the following ballistic performance:
0yds: 1,350 fps | 1,771 ft lbs | -0.5”
25yds: 1,198 fps | 1,394 ft lbs | 0.5”
50yds: 1,086 fps | 1,146 ft lbs | 0.0”
75yds: 1,007 fps | 985 ft lbs | -2.3”
100yds: 947 fps | 872 ft lbs | -6.8”
