Winchester Long Beard XR shotshells aren’t loaded with heavier-than-lead yet highly expensive tungsten shot. Their shot pellets are made out of lead, but thanks to a couple key features this 12 Gauge shell is well equipped to put a turkey down toot suite.

This shell’s #5 shot is plated with copper. That hardens it substantially, ensuring it remains undeformed before clearing the muzzle at 1,300 fps. Copper-plated shot also transfers plenty of energy as it remains hard and round following impact. Winchester’s shot boasts impressively uniform dimensions, so you can count on it to pattern tight and true.

A Long Beard XR shell’s most interesting feature is its Shot-Lok Technology. This shell’s shot column is suspended in solid resin. The clear material becomes pulverized by the force of ignition, at which point it acts as a buffer to provide even greater protection against shot deformation.

This shell’s wad extends the entire length of its shot column to protect the bore, and it opens up wide upon exiting the muzzle to promote an even denser pattern yet. Such perfectly round and patterned shot achieves impressive feats downrange: 10 percent deeper penetration than regular lead shot past 50 yards, with double the number of pellets through a 10” circle at 60 yards.

The overall terminal effect is super effective on birds that gobble. And when you chamber a Winchester shell, you can look forward to reliable ignition, smooth cycling, and the option to reload your own black-hulled beauty after you’ve eaten your turkey dinner.
