Federal’s Classic Steel line of ammunition is an all-time favorite among waterfowl hunters. This 12 Gauge shell showcases everything the Minnesotan company knows about manufacturing and assembling fine components, and its recoil isn’t going to send your socks flying off in two different directions when you fire it.

This shell is loaded with BB steel shot, which hits a sweet spot that makes it as good for hunting geese as it does ducks passing overhead. The shell’s 1,275 fps muzzle velocity does indeed give lightweight steel pellets the energy they need to penetrate deeply enough to kill, although it’s a little lower than what the usual waterfowl hunting offers. That combined with this shell’s 1-1/4 ounce column of shot produces very manageable recoil to facilitate accurate follow-up shots.

Federal’s Classic Steel load performs remarkably cleanly thanks to its low fouling powder and non-corrosive primer, and their full-length plastic wad preserves a shotgun even more as it prevents steel shot from etching its barrel. Once this shell’s water resistant primer has gone away, pluck it out to reload the hull and its brass-plated head!
