This shell is topped off with a single ounce of #7.5 steel shot. The lighter shot column helps to offset recoil resulting from the shell’s spicy 1,330 fps muzzle velocity. That extra push gives the steel shot pellets the momentum they need to fly flat and strike hard – it’s compensation for steel’s lower density (8 g/cc, as opposed to the density of lead which is 11 g/cc).
This shell isn’t just armed with nontoxic shot. It’s even more friendly to the environment courtesy of its wad, which is made of tough paper instead of conventional plastic. A few weeks of exposure to the elements are all it will take to reduce the wad to mush.
Federal loads each Upland Steel shell with their usual high-quality primer and powder, as well as an eight-crimp low-brass hull that any handloader can easily work into their plans.
