Barnes specifically loads this 12 Gauge shotshell for home defense applications. Its #4 buck pellets are each made of lead, 0.24” in diameter and 20.7 grains in weight. Compare that to 00 buck, each pellet of which is 0.33” in diameter and 53.8 grains in weight, and you can already imagine the difference in performance. This shell is able to store 21 individual shot pellets instead of the usual 8 or 9, so you’ll deliver a much wider pattern that has a higher chance of ensnaring the threat. Furthermore, while #4 buck is still plenty capable of tearing through multiple layers of wallboard, it’s not capable of bursting through as many walls as a barrage of 00 buck. If you’re doing all you can to avoid jeopardizing innocent bystanders, #4 buck offers a little more peace of mind.
You could certainly use this ammo for #4 buck’s most popular application, which is coyote hunting, or you can just do a little target practice to see how you like a somewhat rarer shot size. The power is yours!
