This shell isn’t loaded with #4 shot like you’d want for turkey, or maybe pheasant. It’s loaded with #4 buckshot, which is much larger and favored for taking coyote (and maybe whitetail at close range, within thick brush). Whereas 00 buck is usually loaded eight or nine pellets to a 2-3/4” hull, smaller #4 buck fits 24 pellets in the same shell. Sure, each pellet hits relatively softer, but together they deliver a way thicker pattern – precisely what you want when you’re pinning down flighty song dogs.
Hornady’s premium lead can’t take all the credit for this shell’s consistently tight pattern. That’s also the doing of the Versatite wad, which erects brakes around its front and rear section to promote clean, even separation from the shot column.
