Rio has one of the most impressive pedigrees in all the world of ammo, with ties going back to the inventor of dynamite himself. This 2 3/4” shell is loaded with #4 buck, which means it holds a whopping 27 pellets. Now, #4 buck may be significantly smaller than the more ubiquitous double-aught, but that means it puts a lot more shot on target than double-aught as well. Thanks to its smaller size #4 buck presents less of a hazard of wall penetration, vital when someone might be on the other side of your attacker.

None of this is to suggest that #4 buck wants for power. At this shell’s 1,345 fps muzzle velocity just one of its approximately 20.7 grain shot pellets inflicts 83 ft lbs of muzzle energy. Multiply that by 27 and you’ll have one extremely dead deer or coyote, or one extremely dissatisfied home intruder.
