When it is loaded with 00 buckshot, a 12 Gauge 2-3/4” shell usually holds eight or nine pellets. But this shell’s not loaded with double-aught. Its nine pellets are #1 buck, which (A) has a 3/100” narrower pellet, and (B) is about 13 grains lighter. That’s why this shell lobs around 4/5 ounces of shot instead of the usual 1-1/8, at a 1,250 fps muzzle velocity that is average for a target load.
Does that mean this shell’s weaker than average? Relative to a 00 buck load with the same number of pellets, technically, yes. But it’s by no means impotent. At 1,265 ft lbs, its shot column’s collective muzzle energy is pretty much on par with that of a 223 Rem rifle cartridge. Naturally, its force is spread across nine individual points of impact, which gives you just as good a chance of hitting your target the same number of times as a double-aught load might have!
