Lead is pretty much the perfect metal to make bullet cores out of. It’s not just dense, but also extremely cheap. (Just like my ex-wife. ZING!) But lead is also toxic, which makes it not so good for the environment. Fortunately Winchester offers a great way to get the lead out the next time you go varmint hunting with their Varmint X Lead Free line of ammunition.

This 22-250 Rem cartridge features a 38 grain jacketed hollow point bullet. Its thin copper alloy jacket and deep nose cavity work together to deliver catastrophic terminal fragmentation immediately following impact. It’s core is made of zinc, an environmentally-friendly metal that complies with the sorts of laws that ban toxic bullets.

Its unconventional core doesn’t impact this bullet’s ballistics. Loaded to a muzzle velocity of 4,090 fps, it still offers a tight and flat trajectory and the ability to put over 600 ft lbs of energy into a critter minding his own business 200 yards away. This noncorrosive round’s brass case deserves several passes through a reloading press if you’ve got one, and its propellant is clean burning.
