It started out as the 280 Remington. Then Parker Otto Ackley came along to improve the thing, eventually turning it into the cartridge we all very loving and creatively refer to as the “280 Ackley Improved.”

And then that did Federal Premium do? That’s right! The improved the 280 Ackley Improved even further by loading it with their own tipped monolithic hunting bullet.

“Monolithic.” It refers to a bullet that is made entirely out of copper, which the Trophy Copper technically isn’t. It has a polymer tip to streamline its profile, and a boat tail and grooved shank for the same exact purpose. The Trophy Copper also uses its tip to commence expansion across a broad velocity range. And because it is made of of a far more ductile metal than lead, the Trophy Copper reliably sheds no more than 1% of its weight as it presses deeply into the quarry.

Federal used a 24” test barrel to record this round’s 3,075 fps muzzle velocity and truly respectable 0.489 G1 ballistic coefficient. Here’s what those numbers mean in practice:
0yds: 3,075 fps | 2,940 ft lbs | -1.5”
100yds: 2,877 fps | 2,574 ft lbs | 3.4”
200yds: 2,689 fps | 2,248 ft lbs | 4.1”
300yds: 2,508 fps | 1,955 ft lbs | 0.0”
400yds: 2,334 fps | 1,693 ft lbs | -9.7”
500yds: 2,167 fps | 1,460 ft lbs | -25.7”
600yds: 2,006 fps | 1,252 ft lbs | -49.2”
