This cartridge’s bullet is a solid middleweight 150 grain piece of copper alloy. The one-piece bullet’s extreme ductility and lack of a jacket both contribute to its inordinately high weight retention – as impressive as 95%, even after high-velocity impact. The CX sports the same Heat Shield polymer tip as Hornady’s ELD series projectiles, which means blistering hot aerodynamic friction will not warp and deform its sharp, aerodynamic meplat. The CX’s grooved shank does even more to improve its ballistic performance. And once impact drives the CX’s rigid Heat Shield into its deep nose cavity, it fans out wide to transfer crippling energy to its target and stamp a wide wound channel into the same.
Black Hills regularly produces match 5.56 NATO for the U.S. military, and they reserve their Gold label for their very best work. The South Dakotan manufacturer recorded this round’s muzzle velocity using a 24” test barrel, but has not disclosed its ballistic coefficient.
