Let’s not beat around the bush. There’s almost no 357 Magnum cartridge on the planet that isn’t capable of instantly neutralizing a threat. It’s the 357 Mag – not exactly gentle puppy kisses, whichever way you slice it.

That said, there is a best choice of 357 Mag ammo for personal protection. You’re looking right at it: Hornady Critical Duty, which is designed for law enforcement use and also available to members of the general public who don’t like taking any chances.

This cartridge is loaded with the FlexLock. It’s a jacketed hollow point with an abnormally tough high-antimony lead alloy core, as well as an interior band which keeps that core mechanically fastened to its copper jacket. These features enable the FlexLock to penetrate barriers without shedding weight, losing momentum, and penetrating its target less deeply as a result.

The FlexLock’s most obvious feature is its Flex Tip. It’s a red polymer plug which keeps the bullet’s nose cavity free and clear of debris, thus preserving its capacity for wide expansion even if it has to pierce drywall, plywood, leather and fabric before sinking into soft tissue.

This ammo’s nickel-plated brass cases don’t just make it a little easier to see in the cylinder. Nickel shields brass against corrosion, and also makes it a little slicker so you can eject empties quicker. This is a full-power load: 1,275 fps muzzle velocity out of an 8” test barrel, and suitable for use in all handguns and rifles.
