The 38 Special isn’t the most powerful cartridge in the whole wide world. But with the right ammunition, the right revolver, and the right shooter the 38 is able to put down pretty much any threat that could threaten.

DoubleTap makes this personal defense 38 ammo right here at home in Utah. They give it their Controlled Expansion bullet, which is essentially a high quality jacketed hollow point designed for self-defense. In their own test DoubleTap determined this round can punch through four layers of denim and two layers of light cotton and still penetrate almost 15” through ballistic gelatin. Their test bullet expanded to 0.53” – a nearly 50 percent increase in diameter for a wide and damaging wound cavity.

This round’s 110 grain projectile is loaded to give a 4” barrel revolver a muzzle velocity of 1,175 fps, but a snub-nosed revolver’s shorter 1.875" barrel still achieves a serviceable 1,100 fps muzzle velocity. DoubleTap uses the American standard brass cases, non-corrosive Boxer primers, and even burning propellant charges you need for reliable performance at a moment’s notice. 38 Special works just fine in 357 Magnum revolvers too!
