Barnaul goes way, way back to the 19th century. They were originally a factory in St. Petersburg designated “Arsenal P,” and made a lot of the Russian Army’s ammo during WWI. They were relocated to Podosk during the Russian Civil War, and then again to the city of Barnaul during WWII. Now they’re one of the world’s leading manufacturers of steel cased ammo, which is great if you’re on a budget and refuse to shoot any less than you want to.

This 40 S&W cartridge has a 165 grain FMJ bullet. It’s a bimetal jacket, to be precise, which substitutes much of its copper with steel in order to reduce production costs. As a European manufacturer Barnaul does not load ammo to SAAMI specs. They load this particular round to a max pressure of 32,630 psi, which is 2,370 psi less than what SAAMI calls for. All that means is this ammo is safe to fire in your handgun – although its bullets are magnetic.

And this ammo’s cases are magnetic, too. That’s Russia’s signature steel case, coated with friction-reducing polymer to enhance its ability to feed and extract without jamming, but pretty much useless for handloading. This ammo’s Berdan primers are as non-corrosive as any other manufacturer’s, and its propellant charges burn to deliver a consistent muzzle velocity of 984 fps.
