Looking for a steal on your next case of ammo? Then look for steel in your next case of ammo! This 40 S&W cartridge by Russian manufacturer Wolf utilizes steel in both its shell casing and bullet to keep its price nice and low.

A steel shell casing is devoid of the valuable copper that makes up brass, and you’ll see that pleasantly reflected in this case’s price tag. Wolf applies a thin coating of special polymer to their casings to reduce steel-on-steel friction, and their Berdan primer is also cost-effective while still providing the corrosion-free ignition you should expect of a modern cartridge.

This round’s 180 grain FMJ bullet also contains steel! It’s strengthened with a thin layer of the metal for smooth feeding and the prevention of deformation during ignition. The outside of the bullet is still coated in copper, though, so it’s gentle on the bore while preventing its riflings from fouling up quickly.

Steel saves you money, but it has its drawbacks. These rounds’ casings are unsuitable for handloading, especially since they have two flash holes instead of the single one that a Boxer primer is compatible with. Also, many indoor ranges ban magnetic bullets given their ability to create sparks and damage backdrops. But if you can overlook those shortcomings, you’ll find this affordable ammo a worthy companion the next few times you take care of some targets!
