In order to find out how different self-defense handgun loads perform, we decided to do some ballistics gelatin testing of our own. The chart below is a compilation of expansion and penetration data for Liberty Ammunition 60 gr Civil Defense fired from 10 feet, through four layers of fabric (to simulate clothing), using a Glock 27 pistol.
The photo slider provides a close-up view of the bullets we recovered from the gelatin, and the video shows this load entering the gel in extreme slow motion.
The diagrams at the bottom of the page can give you an idea of how this load compares to other .40 S&W (Smith & Wesson) self-defense loads that we tested.
We did a lot more of this ballistic gelatin testing, including over 100 different loads in a variety of calibers, so check out Lucky Gunner Labs for all the details.

MY GO TO . . .
Packing 24/7/365. Nothing comes between my Springfield 40 subby, 12rds and laser sighted and me even for a minute. Best ammo I've ever used. Blasted a gelatin block with a couple boxes, and knew immediately, aside from range work, this is my EDC ammo.
I used 9mm before, now I'm using .40 cal for greater stopping power. Liberty .40 cal 60 grain has the same recoil as 9mm JHP 145 grain of other brands, that along with a conical wound cavity of 3 to 3 and1/2 inch from the fragments in every test using the FBI standard makes this an exceptional self-defense round.
I bought a box just to have something that might have less recoil to shoot with my girl at the range. I'm impressed actually and have purchased more since. The recoil was less than my kal-tec 9. Increased accuracy firing repeated rounds is what I'm after in a self defense round after all.
Water jug at 30 yards emoty just a rovk weight and it left 20 pieces of the round and a 6 in hole in the back.
Through and through on a propane cylinder at 40 yards, so no loss of power best round for me!
