We test fired five rounds of .40 S&W (Smith & Wesson) Remington 165 gr Golden Saber into synthetic ballistic gelatin to observe its expansion and penetration characteristics. The ammo was fired from a Glock 27 pistol at a distance of 10 feet. A four-layer barrier of heavy fabric was placed in front of the gelatin to simulate clothing.
The complete data for this load from our test can be found on the chart below. The photo slider displays the expanded bullets that were retrieved from the gel. Pictured below is a high speed video that shows the bullet entering the gel at approximately 10,000 frames per second. The diagrams at the bottom of the page should give you an idea of how this load compares to other .40 S&W (Smith & Wesson) loads.

The Golden Saber in .40 cal is excellent ammo, and the price is pretty reasonable, so a great value IMO. No wonder so many law enforcement officers carry it. 165 grains at 1,100 fps from a 3-inch barrel Glock 27 subcompact is 443 foot lbs of energy (bullet weight x velocity squared)--485 lbs from a 4" barrel. The right bullet weight balance for a .40 round. A torso shot with this stuff can stop a 200+ lb human attacker in his tracks. Nearly enough to humanely drop a 200 lb deer. Enough said. Common sense. The reason I carry it.
There are a number of great choices in 40 S&W bullets out there. I have personally tested Speer, Hornady Critical Defense, and Corbon DPX as well as Federal Hydra-Shok and these Remington Golden Saber (bonded). I must say that I saw similar results in expansion in all of them with Hydra-Shok doing okay, but not the best by any means. This Remington Golden Saber produced the best expansion followed by the a tie between Corbon and Hornady. Speer done well, but quite the expansion. These particular bullets are exceptional. Very accurate, feed well, expand and penetrate as advertised. I highly recommend these as a defensive load in handgun and carbine. The perform as advertised in every caliber i have tested. The .40 was superb.
