This 45-70 Government Magnum cartridge has the exterior dimensions of a SAAMI spec load – but its chamber pressure far exceeds SAAMI standards. Its 350 grain bullet and 2,145 fps muzzle velocity out of a Marlin 1895’s 22” barrel (or 2,060 fps out of a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun’s 18.5” barrel) certainly attest to that!
This round’s immensely powerful bullet is a jacketed flat nose. It doesn’t expand all that much – only to approximately 0.6 inches. As a result, it’s capable of penetrating to a depth of around 4 feet within muscle and bone. That’s the kind of terminal performance you can trust to take down dangerous game, and it’ll do a real number on any deer species you could encounter in the United States!
