The 45 ACP has been a favorite around the world for over a century. When it came to the market, along with the Colt 1911 pistol, both became some of the most highly favored products around the world. Great for defending yourself from any danger due to its phenomenal stopping power and its amazing damage capacity, this round has been proven through over a century of use by militaries, law enforcement agencies, and civilians all over the world.
If you are looking for inexpensive but reliable ammo, PMC is the perfect company for you. Creating all the ammo for the South Korean military as well as for consumers around the world, this manufacturer knows just how to make the ammo you need. With these 230 grain, jacketed hollow point, PMC Starfire, brass cased, boxer primed rounds, you get bullets designed specifically for penetration and controlled expansion, making them fantastic for defending yourself.
How does PMC 230 Grain compare to other .45 ACP (Auto) self-defense loads? We conducted some tests with Clear Ballistics synthetic gelatin to find out. Following the FBI’s test protocol, we fired five rounds into the gel with a barrier of heavy clothing. We used a Kahr CW45 because the short barrel is similar to the type of compact handguns that are most likely to be carried concealed. Images of the fired bullets suspended in the gelatin are in the graphic above.
We measured the penetration depth of each bullet and then recovered them from the gel to measure the expanded diameter. You can find all of that data in the chart at the bottom of this page. Photos of the recovered bullets are below on the left and a slow motion video of the first bullet fired into the gel is down on the right.
If you’d like to know more about our ballistic gelatin testing and see the results from over 150 other self-defense loads, check out the article on Lucky Gunner Labs.
