The M193 projectile was developed for the 5.56x45 cartridge during the 1960s, and it remained the M16 rifle’s primary ammo until the M855 usurped that role in 1982. But 5.56 55 grain FMJ is still considered the standard ammo for target shooting with an AR-15 rifle!

This round’s bullet consists of a lead core and copper alloy jacket, with no steel that could get it in trouble at ranges which prohibit magnetic ammunition. The bullet’s hard jacket helps it feed without complication in a semi-auto regardless of how quickly it’s being fired, not to mention prevent rapid barrel fouling.

The M193 bullet may not have the nose cavity, soft point or polymer tip it needs to unleash expansion within its target, but its high velocity coupled with its ability to fragment following close-range impact does make it appropriate for self-defense applications. Still, we always say FMJ ammo is for range training because better solutions for home defense are available.

This 5.56 ammunition is made by IMI, which is the nation of Israel’s primary ammo supplier. IMI loads their new production ammo with non-corrosive Boxer primers and brass cases. Because this ammo is military grade, its cases were not polished up after they were strengthened via heat-treatment. But despite their discoloration, these cases are indeed new and reloadable.
