When is a country truly dead and dusted? We believe it happens when people stop firing its ammunition, so by that measure the great nation of Yugoslavia is alive and thriving. This 8mm Mauser cartridge was made in the 1950s, and it has sat in wait since then for a great shooter to finally make good use of it.

This M49 round was standard issue for the Yugoslav National Army’s bolt-action rifles. With its 198 grain full metal jacket projectile it’s perfect for perforating things at the range, and it’s reasonable to assume that an army cartridge would make a good self-defense solution in a pinch. We regret that as of yet we have been unable to confirm whether this round’s bullet contains any steel.

This cartridge features a new production brass shell casing. Its Berdan primer would pose quite the headache for a handloading enthusiast, but if you don’t intend to handload you don’t have to worry about it. Do note that this round’s primer is corrosive, so you’ll want to take necessary precautions while cleaning. Ballistol would work excellently, although Windex or hot water would suffice as well.
