The FBI wanted a better jacketed hollow point bullet back in the ‘80s. Federal Premium listened and developed the Hydra-Shok. The Minnesotan company has since gone on to develop more technologically advanced JHPs, but the Hydra-Shok remains an effective solution for personal protection all the same!

This 9mm round features the heaviest 0.355” diameter Hydra-Shok. Its muzzle velocity (1,000 fps out of a 4” barrel) is accordingly subsonic, and therefore optimal for suppressed firearms. The massive bullet also excels at retaining the momentum requisite for effectively deep penetration.

The Hydra-Shok features a notched jacket. It’s engineered to split apart evenly and promote overall more uniform terminal expansion. Look inside the JHP’s nose cavity and you will see a small protrusion. The center post’s job is also to promote more reliable expansion!

Federal loads these self-defense rounds with nickel-plated brass cases. Nickel’s advantages are threefold: added protection against corrosion, smoother operation in a semi-automatic, and better visibility during a chamber check in dark environments.
