Why can't I use small pistol primers in my AR-15?

Safety. The AR-15's free-floating firing pin touches the primer during chambering. Soft pistol primer cups can detonate from this contact alone (slam-fire). Small rifle primers' hard cups resist this incidental contact. Using pistol primers in AR-15s risks uncontrolled full-auto fire—extremely dangerous.

Can I use small rifle primers in pistol cartridges?

Technically possible but not recommended. The harder cup may not ignite reliably with lighter pistol firing pins, causing misfires. Some competition shooters use them in high-pressure pistol loads, but this requires testing with your specific firearm. Stick with pistol primers for pistols.

Are CCI #41 primers different from regular small rifle?
