Surplus ammunition and firearms are still readily available, and one of the most plentiful cartridges on the market is 7.62x54R. Although the Russians developed it, the R doesn't stand for Russian - it stands for Rimmed, because this is a rimmed cartridge. It was introduced in 1891 and is still in use by front line units of the Russian military, among others, such as Bulgaria. As these countries cycle through their ammunition stocks, they sell some of the extra stuff as surplus.
I tested some Bulgarian surplus 7.62x54R. This ammo comes in a sealed tin, which makes it great for storage. It's a little difficult to open if you don't have one of the can openers made for this purpose, but it can still be done with other tools like a hammer and chisel.
Once you get the can open, you see that the ammo was inspected by some Bulgarians in a factory thirty or forty years ago. The ammo is wrapped in paper boxes tied with string. Kinda like Christmas presents, if you live in a dreary Eastern European country.
The cases and the bullets are made of a really mild steel, but they will attract a magnet, so you should be aware of this before you take it to a range that doesn't allow ammo that will attract a magnet. They're copper washed and the bullets have a painted silver tip, which identifies them as light ball ammo. There is a red sealant on the case mouth and the primer to prevent moisture intrusion. This stuff was meant for military use, and they weren't messing around when they made it.
I tested the ammo in five different rifles. They were all Mosin Nagants, but from different countries. The oldest was a Remington. Did you know that Remington made Mosin Nagants in the United States for the Russian military? Well, now you do, and knowing is half the battle. The others were Russian and Chinese. The Chinese one had a broken extractor before we started shooting, but once we replaced it, it shot just fine. All of the rifles did, actually. We didn't have any malfunctions.
Shooting this ammo in your Mosin is really simple. You load it, select the right distance on your rear sight, and shoot. We were at a range that had steel plates every hundred meters. Here I am shooting at 300 meters about as fast as I can work the action and pull the trigger, and I still got multiple hits. It's a lot of fun, but even better, it's cheap fun.
This ammo is corrosive, but it's not a big deal to clean out the corrosive salts left by this ammunition. You can just use soap and hot water. That'll flush out those salts and prevent rust or corrosion from forming inside the weapon.
If you are looking for ammo that is affordable, reliable, decently accurate, and fun, you should definitely pick up some surplus 7.62x54 while it's still available.

A+ Good stuff, fast shipping
It shoots straighter and more consistently than I do after not shooting much while living on the loony left coast, so I moved to AZ :- ) Get it now, Don't wait! it only takes one stroke of the executive (dis)order pen to end this and anything in the future so grab a few.
Just got mine last week.
Thanks guys. My order shipped out the same day and got here right on time. I am not even upset about the price being higher than normal. Its the market were in right now and that is just capitalism. Got the ammo the same day I picked up the rifle. Gonna be going out this weekend to use it. Thank you tons for putting the can opener in there to. It would have been a lot harder without it. I will definitely be getting another 880 as soon as I can afford it. :)
My Wife Even Liked The Great Deal.
Ordered Sunday evening, received Wednesday morning; AWESOME! My son and I are headed back to the range with some of this ammo this afternoon; always a fun time with the Mosin! Great company, great customer service!
Great fun on the cheap. Ships in 2, 440 round spam tins, with 1 opener. Great for shooting one and saving one for the coming financial collapse. Clean your gun completely after shooting this ammo, but you should no matter what you are shooting. Super fast shipping! Thanks Lucky Gunner!
I have shot several hundred rounds and have no FTF. It is very accurate and cleaning is not a problem. 15
minutes and my Mosin looks like new again.
I was able to pick an opener on Ebay for $6.00 and free shipping.
Thanks Lucky Gunner for the great deal.
Can't beat Bulgarian surplus ammo for your Russian surplus rifle!!!!! Well packaged...thanks to Lucky Gunner!! The best part is that as along as you order the 880 round deal, you get the can opener. Thanks again Lucky Gunner.
A great value!
I fired 50 in a row with no problems to report. 880 rounds shipped fast and fire every time is a great deal. The one and only drawback is they are corrosive and dirty. As long as you are like me and take very good car of your rifle this is no problem to worry about.
I received my 2 cans in the over box quickly. Since I am in a rural area the catron was on my front porch when I got home. I wanted to check things out and was suprized when the opener fell out as I had been told by another supplier that the opener was not available. Shoots well and have had no trouble with this ammo. I will be ordering more from Lucky Gunner. Thanks to those who said to use warm soap and water and windex to keep from corroding the barrel.
This ammo far exceeded my expectations and I would highly recommend it but I have to point out that the customer service is the best! My original order never showed (UPS issue) and Lucky Gunner resent my order immediately no hassles and they were just simply great about it! Remember to select the insurance option that they offer at check out!
Thanks Lucky Gunner!
Good ammo for a good price
The 2 cans were shipped and received on time. Fortunately they came with an opener. The ammo is made to military standards and does the job. Just clean the barrel with Windex to prevent corrosion and you'll be fine. Well worth the money.
L G rocks!
First order got lost/stolen, no problem LG gave me a credit to use anytime and were so nice....I love people from Tennessee!
Took said ordinance to grounds. There were the ubiquitus guys with the 223's. Tiny little poofs of dust when that ammo hit the background. After the first shot out of the Mosin, the crowd fell silent. Some guy said."what the hell is that thing?".
Throws a ton of dust in the air and greases its way through both sides of a modern steel I beam....
Cheap and good.
Will be visiting Miami soon and buying more. (thats a zombie joke)
Remember this ammo
This is ammo that when it is no longer available you will say "Remember when you could get bulgarian Moisin ammo at uner $200.00 per 800. Very consistant ammo I was getting 1 to 1.54 MOA at 100 yards shooting 30 rounds 3 per group.
This ammo has functioned flawlessly and I have gotten good results form it. Precision wise, I can get them to sub-MOA at 100 yards out of my Mosin (using a scope). Next time I stock up, I'll be getting more of this for sure!
Great stuff at a great price
A buddy and I both picked up a Mosin-Nagant 91/30 last week and had trouble finding ammo for it locally and when we could find it the price was high. Lucky Gunner to the rescue! This stuff is cheap, comes in a neat-o can, and had zero problems being fired. Just remember to clean your rifle(s) after shooting this stuff.
GREAT AMMO AT A GREAT PRICE
I have found this '70's era ammo performs as well as the newer stuff at a lower cost. No FTFs and accurate out to 300 yards. You may experience a few split cases out of 100 rounds but the splits are minimul and cause no ejection problems. For the price this is a very good quality ammo for your Mosin-Nagant that will give you many days of satisfied shooting. I give it a 5 star rating. Lucky Gunner has the best prices around.
Never had experience with any other ammo aside from this, went to the range and fired off about 80 rounds. worked great, nice kick after fire. not much experience shooting, but the delivery was on time and very smooth transaction. Great price too! keep it up guys.
Great ammo and perfect for PSL shooters
Been using the surplus ammo in my Romanian PSL for awhile now with zero issues. The silvertip ammo is the best for ballistics in weapons demanding light ball ammunition. If the can is still sealed the ammo is as good as the day it was made.
Opened the can with hammer@chisel.Can metal is very soft@easy to cut.Ammo looks brand new@well made. It's even sealed where bullet tip joins shell.Keep powder dry?I heard ammo sealed up like this lasts forever.
