That was a smart move on Federal’s part, because this ammo is intended for the most important job a 410 handgun can serve: self-defense.
Federal’s Personal Defense 410 Handgun series shell is loaded with nine pieces of #4 buckshot – not #4 shot, which is 0.13” in diameter, but #4 buck shot, which is 0.24”. That’s about as small as buckshot gets, but small buckshot has a lot to offer when lives are on the line.
Nine ~20.7 grain projectiles exiting a revolver barrel at 950 fps share a collective muzzle energy of 373 ft lbs. That’s plenty more than the minimum recommended for defense, and up to nine potential 0.24” diameter wound channels per shot are certain to slow the threat down (if not stop them instantly). The smaller shot pellets also present a lower risk of overpenetration, which may just prevent disastrous consequences for innocent bystanders.
