The 22 Short doesn’t get nearly as much love as its taller, more powerful son. Anyone who thinks that’s the way it ought to be has got a gourd full of hogwash! The 22 Short cannot be beaten when you want to keep noise and recoil at an absolute minimum while you’re shooting targets or pests with any 22 LR firearm.

That comes with a caveat. This Winchester Super-X ammo cannot cycle a semi-automatic. It won’t feed from a semi-auto’s magazine, either. That means if you want to fire these puppies in a Mark V, 10/22, or AR-22, you’ll be chambering them each by hand.

• A 22 LR with a 40 grain bullet and 1,200 fps muzzle velocity: 48.0 power factor.
• A 22 Short with a 29 grain bullet and 1,095 fps muzzle velocity (e.g. this one): 31.8 power factor.
In summary, you can expect about two-thirds as much oomph out of this 22 Short ammo as you would from a standard 22 LR target load.
