The Winchester Ranger line of ammunition is engineered for increased velocities and stopping power and is some of the most powerful 38 Special rounds produced today. Winchester welded the casing and bullet together for the Ranger products, which allows them to work in unison for more controlled expansion and retention of weight at impact.

Manufactured by the legendary Winchester Ammunition Company, this product is brand new, boxer-primed, nickel-plated brass cased, non-corrosive, and re-loadable.

Ballistics Test Summary

We wanted to know exactly what happens to a self-defense handgun bullet on impact, so following FBI protocols, we fired five rounds of Winchester 110 gr Ranger +P+ from 10 feet, through four layers of cloth (to simulate clothing), into synthetic ballistic gelatin. The photos below show the bullets recovered from the gelatin after being fired from a Kimber K6s pistol. There’s also a high speed video that shows the bullet impacting the gelatin block.

All the data we gathered pertaining to expansion and penetration of this load can be found in the chart below, and the diagrams at the bottom of the page show how it compares to other .38 Special self-defense loads from our tests.

Q: Is this ammo safe to shoot out of a Smith and Wesson 442? It's rated for continuous plus p use but what about plus p plus?

A: Hello Jesse! I've got that same revolver on my desk right now. The thing about +P+ ammo is that it's not loaded according to industry sandards, by definition. As a result, many firearm manufacturers won't explicitly recommend it recommend it for any of their firearms. In truth, this ammo actually does have the potential to damage your revolver. I'd recommend sticking to +P.
