Details

This special run of Federal American Eagle 40 cal ammunition functions to the same high standards that you are used to with the advantage that this is ideally suited for indoor ranges with its TMJ projectile. Additionally, the primers used in this cartridge are toxic metal free reducing the amount of lead exposure for poorly ventilated areas.

Federal American Eagle is quality American made ammunition. This ammo is brand new, brass-cased, boxer-primed, non-corrosive, and reloadable. For range training ammunition, it doesn't get any better!

Video Transcript:

American Eagle is a brand of ammo from Federal and part of the larger ATK family of ammo companies along with a CCI, Blazer, and Speer. All the ammo from the ATK companies is made right here in the US. American Eagle has a reputation for being some of Federal's best practice ammo and it's also very affordable.

For this review, we were checking out American Eagle's 40 Smith and Wesson indoor-friendly load. Like all American Eagle loads, this round has a reloadable brass case with a Federal head stamp. Where it differs from some of the other available rounds is the bullet and the primer.

The 165 grain bullet has a normal lead core, but features a total metal jacket, also known as copper plating. A normal full metal jacket doesn't cover the base of the bullet, leaving some exposed lead on the bottom. Copper plating is thinner than a jacket. But it covers the entire bullet.

In addition to the lead bullet, a lot of the toxic material in a normal cartridge comes from the metal used in the primer. But this American Eagle load features a toxic metal free primer. These features combine to make a load that's ideal for indoor ranges where you want to keep the airborne toxins to an absolute minimum.

Aside from the non-toxic features, this round functions and performs just like any other American Eagle load. We ran the ammo through six different handguns and didn't have any problems with ignition or reliability. On top of that, the cases are reloadable, just like any other round. And they're actually a little cleaner than most fired cases.

We tried out accuracy from a benchrest at 15 yards using a SIG P226. We jerked a couple of shots a little off target. But most of our rounds impacted in a nice little group just to the left of our point of aim.

American Eagle is always a good choice for the range. And if you do a lot of your shooting indoors, this load is the perfect option for 40 caliber handguns.
