Small arms ammunition currently used by the US Military is produced at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant. This plant is operated under contract by ATK, which owns Federal Ammunition, and they are allowed to sell their excess production on the civilian market each year. Federal sells this ammo under the American Eagle label, and adds an X to the front of the ammo designation to indicate that it has been sold on the civilian market. This ammo is not seconds, or blemished, and meets all the standards for ammo produced at the Lake City plant.
The brass cases produced at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant are highly regarded as being durable, and ideal for reloading. One important step in the manufacturing process for brass case ammunition is annealing. Starting from a flat sheet of brass, the cases are formed through a number of steps called the cup and draw process. Each step in this process causes the brass to become brittle, so it is heated to ensure that it remains workable. When brass is produced for US Military Ammunition, the evidence of the annealing process is left on the case, so that the military's inspectors can ensure that this critical step has been completed.
XM855 ammo features a 62 grain, copper jacketed, lead core, steel tip bullet. It is not armor piercing ammunition, but the steel tip does allow it to penetrate farther than other types of ammo. This bullet will attract a magnet because of the steel in the tip, and some ranges will not allow you to use it because of this. However, it will not damage the barrel of your rifle, because the steel is entirely covered by a layer of copper.
Federal offers a weather resistant ammo can containing 420 rounds of this ammunition. Composed of 14 30-round boxes containing three stripper clips of 10 rounds each, this product is ideal for those looking to store ammo long term, but who also want to be able to access and load it quickly.
Stripper clips make loading magazines much easier, because you can load 10 rounds with the same amount of effort that it takes to load one round without stripper clips. This way, you can spend more time shooting, and less time loading magazines. The 30-round boxes also make more sense if you use 30-round magazines, because one box loads one magazine. Finally, you can use stripper clips with aluminum AR-15 magazines, or polymer magazines, like the Magpul PMAG.
The ammunition itself is extremely high quality, and has features not seen on other ammunition of this type. This ammo has a crimped primer, reducing the chances of a blown primer stopping a semi-automatic, or automatic rifle from functioning. It also has a lacquer primer sealant and a case mouth sealant, to prevent the internal components from being compromised by moisture intrusion.
The bullet has a cannelure, and the case mouth is crimped, reducing the chances of bullet setback. Also, the ammo itself is tested to function from negative 40 to 125 degrees Fahrenheit.
I tested this ammunition in a number of semi-automatic rifles. Whether I was shooting slowly or rapidly, it never failed to function properly. Because this ammo was loaded to 5.56 pressures, it will work well, even in rifles that are dirty, or have not been recently lubricated.
I used a chronograph to measure the average velocity of 10 shots from 16-inch and 20-inch AR-15s. I also fired a 10-shot group at 50 yards to check accuracy. Both muzzle velocity and accuracy were within the range specified by Federal.
This ammo is packaged in a reusable ammo can, and it is presented in the same way that it is typically issued to combat personnel on the ground. The stripper clips make loading magazines much easier. And the ammunition is of the highest quality. Whether you're looking to practice, train, or just have fun, Federal XM855 ammo is a great choice.

This is my 3rd order of XM855 5.56 from Lucky Gunner and each time, the shipping was incredibly fast (at my door within a couple of days of placing the order!). The ammo is pretty good quality. Had some minor dings on a few rounds but overall, the casings are clean and the ammo shoots as expected. Haven't had any FTF/FTE and accuracy is about what I expected for bench shooting. Ran 20 rounds through new stag 3 with no problems. Finished the day shooting 22lr with the 22 conversion kit. Learning to feed the stripper clips into magazine is challenging..... takes some effort but it seems to help if you wiggle side to side (slightly) while pushing down with thumb..... quick shipping. I am going on my third shipment of this ammo and have not had a single malfunction yet. I also am shooting in north west PA in the winter and it fires every time. This is Lake City Brass, which is famous for its high quality ammo they make for the U.S. Army (I think the Marines get theirs somewhere else). I have over 1300 rds.put away and just bought 1000 rds.more. It works greak in my LMT SBR with 1:7 twist military spec.rifle. I also use green tip exclusively in my Ruger Mini-14 too because it has the heavy barrel and can handle the increased pressure from this great round. This is the best round out there for a AR-15.
