This ammunition is corrosive but as long as you clean your rifle after use, it's a great way to provide a large savings over current production ammo as you have fun at the range.
Video Transcript:
Surplus ammunition and firearms are still readily available, and one of the most plentiful cartridges on the market is 7.62x54R. Although the Russians developed it, the R doesn't stand for Russian - it stands for Rimmed, because this is a rimmed cartridge. It was introduced in 1891 and is still in use by front line units of the Russian military, among others, such as Bulgaria. As these countries cycle through their ammunition stocks, they sell some of the extra stuff as surplus.
I tested some Bulgarian surplus 7.62x54R. This ammo comes in a sealed tin, which makes it great for storage. It's a little difficult to open if you don't have one of the can openers made for this purpose, but it can still be done with other tools like a hammer and chisel.
Once you get the can open, you see that the ammo was inspected by some Bulgarians in a factory thirty or forty years ago. The ammo is wrapped in paper boxes tied with string. Kinda like Christmas presents, if you live in a dreary Eastern European country.
The cases and the bullets are made of a really mild steel, but they will attract a magnet, so you should be aware of this before you take it to a range that doesn't allow ammo that will attract a magnet. They're copper washed and the bullets have a painted silver tip, which identifies them as light ball ammo. There is a red sealant on the case mouth and the primer to prevent moisture intrusion. This stuff was meant for military use, and they weren't messing around when they made it.
I tested the ammo in five different rifles. They were all Mosin Nagants, but from different countries. The oldest was a Remington. Did you know that Remington made Mosin Nagants in the United States for the Russian military? Well, now you do, and knowing is half the battle. The others were Russian and Chinese. The Chinese one had a broken extractor before we started shooting, but once we replaced it, it shot just fine. All of the rifles did, actually. We didn't have any malfunctions.
Shooting this ammo in your Mosin is really simple. You load it, select the right distance on your rear sight, and shoot. We were at a range that had steel plates every hundred meters. Here I am shooting at 300 meters about as fast as I can work the action and pull the trigger, and I still got multiple hits. It's a lot of fun, but even better, it's cheap fun.
This ammo is corrosive, but it's not a big deal to clean out the corrosive salts left by this ammunition. You can just use soap and hot water. That'll flush out those salts and prevent rust or corrosion from forming inside the weapon.
If you are looking for ammo that is affordable, reliable, decently accurate, and fun, you should definitely pick up some surplus 7.62x54 while it's still available.

I read the reviews and agree with the others. Its good cheap fun. I recently bought a Moisin Nagant and picked these up for it. I will order more here soon and I've only shot a couple hundred rounds! (Posted on 3/31/12)Performance Value Quality - GREAT AMMO AT A GREAT PRICE Review by Max

I have found this '70's era ammo performs as well as the newer stuff at a lower cost. No FTFs and accurate out to 300 yards. You may experience a few split cases out of 100 rounds but the splits are minimul and cause no ejection problems. For the price this is a very good quality ammo for your Mosin-Nagant that will give you many days of satisfied shooting. I give it a 5 star rating. Lucky Gunner has the best prices around. Never had experience with any other ammo aside from this, went to the range and fired off about 80 rounds. worked great, nice kick after fire. not much experience shooting, but the delivery was on time and very smooth transaction. Been using the surplus ammo in my Romanian PSL for awhile now with zero issues. The silvertip ammo is the best for ballistics in weapons demanding light ball ammunition. If the can is still sealed the ammo is as good as the day it was made. (Posted on 3/10/12)Performance Value Quality - Great Price-Great Performance Review by jeepster
