Details
Each round is brass-cased, boxer-primed, non-corrosive, and reloadable. The bullets are soft lead and are great for shooting metal spinner targets (lower richochet than jacketed bullets).
The product is both economical and precision manufactured in the United States by an established U.S. cartridge producer. The American Eagle brand is a product line of the Federal Cartridge Co., which is owned by ATK, the largest ammunition manufacturer in the United States.
Video Transcript:
Federal is one of the ATK family of ammo brands along with CCI, Speer, and Blazer. Federal makes a wide variety of handgun ammo. But American Eagle is probably best known for being one of the most consistent and reliable brands of handgun ammo on the market.
American Eagle offers several different revolver cartridges with a variety of bullet types. For this review, we shot a couple of boxes of their 38 Special lead round nose. This round features a reloadable brass case with a non-corrosive primer. The 158 grain bullet is a cast lead round nose, which is one of the oldest and most basic bullet designs still widely available.
Cast lead bullets are uncommon in auto cartridges because they can sometimes cause feeding issues. But they work great in revolvers. And the absence of any kind of jacket helps to keep the overall cost low. We found the recoil for this round to be very moderate, making follow-up shots easy-- even in our lightweight Ruger snub-nose.
And, as you can see in the heavier guns, there's barely any muzzle rise when using this load. We pulled out a variety of targets and had a lot of fun with this ammo. It's great for planking and other range applications when you really want low recoil.
Reliability was also great. And none of our six test revolvers had any problems with ignition or extraction from the chamber after firing. Lead round nose bullets are not known for being especially accurate. But our tests from the bench at 15 yards still yielded pretty good results.
We fired 10 rounds from a Ruger GP100 with most of the bullets impacting just above our point-of-aim. American Eagle and 38 Special is a great value and probably some of the best range ammo you can get for your revolver.
