It is loaded to NATO specs and is NOT intended for use in commercial or bolt-action rifles chambered for 223 Remington ammo - but is is perfect for your AR15! Please check with your gun manufacturer prior to purchasing this ammo (most AR15's are fine, but it is best to check first!).

Lake City Army Ammunition Plant is where most of the small arms ammunition used by US Armed Forces is made. It's operated by a government contractor called ATK. And they're allowed to sell their excess production on the civilian market each year. They do so under the Federal American Eagle label. I tested this 5.56 millimeter XM855 ammunition in a variety of semi-automatic rifles, including different types of AR-15s. It offered perfect function in all of them. There isn't really much to say here. This ammo is designed to operate flawless function and it delivers.
Because it was originally designed and produced for military use, this ammunition has features that set it apart from other ammo on the the civil market. Crimping the primer reduces the chances of the primer blowing out of the case and preventing from cycling normally. Sealant on both primer and the case mouth help protect the power and primer from moisture, which can render the ammunition useless.
Also, the bullet has a cannelure and the case mouth is crimped. These steps reduce the chances of bullet set back, which can raise pressures to unsafe levels. As well as potentially cause feeding issues.
Finally, the ammunition is tested to function at temperatures ranging from negative 40 to 125 degrees Fahrenheit. This XM855 ammo is loaded with a 62 grain, copper jacketed, lead core, steel tipped bullet. Although steel tip does allow it to penetrate farther than other types of ammo through some materials, is not considered armor piercing ammunition.
Some shooting ranges will not allow you to use it because of this. Don't be concerned, though. It won't cause damage to your barrel or rifle. The steel is entirely covered by a layer of copper. Because steel takes up more space than lead for a given weight, this projectile is longer than a 62 grain lead core bullet. The downside to this is that it will not stabilize from rifles with a 1/12 twist rate. But is ideal for 1/9 or 1/7 twist rifles.
Also, the increased length means a higher ballistic coefficient. Which allows the bullet to fly farther and be less susceptible to wind drift at long ranges.
Because this ammo is loaded to higher 5.56 millimeter pressures, you should not use this ammo if you have a 20 223 Remington chamber. If your rifle has a 5.56 millimeter chamber, or another chamber that's designed to safely shoot this ammunition, then you can use this ammunition without concern.
One thing that sets this ammo apart from other products on the market is the visible case annealing or heat treatment. This process helps prevent cracks and other failures of the brass cases. Military ammo has the evidence of this process left on the case for easy verification that it has been completed. To verify this ammo met the standards that have been set for it, I used to chronograph to measure the average velocity of ten shot groups from both 16 and 20 inch AR-15s. I also fired a 10 shot group at 50 yards to test precision. Not surprisingly, both results were well within the ranges specified by federal.
Because of the high reliability of this ammo and the standards to which it's held, it's easy to recommend XM855. If you need brass cased 5.56 millimeter ammo for pretty much any reason, you should definitely take a look at XM855.
