In order to find out how different self-defense handgun loads perform, we decided to do some ballistics gelatin testing of our own. The chart below is a compilation of expansion and penetration data for Federal 180 gr Hydra-Shok fired from 10 feet, through four layers of fabric (to simulate clothing), using a Glock 20 pistol.
The photo slider provides a close-up view of the bullets we recovered from the gelatin, and the video shows this load entering the gel in extreme slow motion.
The diagrams at the bottom of the page can give you an idea of how this load compares to other 10mm Auto self-defense loads that we tested.
We did a lot more of this ballistic gelatin testing, including over 100 different loads in a variety of calibers, so check out Lucky Gunner Labs for all the details.

Wise Choice for EDC....IMHO
Review by Jim
I hear that cry of underpowered loud and clear. We who have the 10mm's, went for their potential for sure. Like many, I got mine for woods and hunting. And if I can have some of my firearms pull double duty, I think that's a win.
Here's what I am liking about this load. I am an avid shooter of 9 & 40 and have both for self defence. I carry widely accepted commercial name self defence loads for that purpose ( Speer & Federal ). Recently I have gone to a 10mm for woods carry, after backpacking in Griz and wolf territory. I realized I needed to "up it" a bit for larger dangerous game, and wanted more than 6 rounds, so 10mm in a semi auto fit the bill for me.
As we all know, 10mm can be a powerhouse in many loads. Who wouldn't want that for general self defence as well? But, just food for thought from another angle; The "stigma" of 10mm , and self defence use of firearms these days. Everyone is super critical of everything. No denying, justification is justification. But I can see where things could get sideways in a courtroom with a not so well informed jury, and a overzealous prosecutor.
( you could see where that could go).
But if you articulate your shooting platform was a firearm capable of shooting higher powered 10mm in hunting and woods carry, yet you "downgraded" to a cartridge that is very close to standard .40 caliber self defence power that the local police carry, you may be in much better light in that scenario. ( Speer Gold Dot .40 in this same load : 180 gr/1025 fps/420 ft-lb & the sister Federal, .40 180gr, 1000 fps/400 ft-lb ).
In my opinion, this make the 10mm a super versatile round. One pistol to practice with for hunting, target shooting, and self defence. Of course most of us will have a host of different pistols. But with different loads, the 10mm can articuably fill a few roles. And with these Federal loads that are on the "light side", yet still no slouch, are good self defence rounds without being looked at as a "Dirty Harry" type by the uninformed.
If you get in a jam while out in the woods.....it is what it is in that case. But for general EDC, I think this is a great choice to switch back to when away from the woods or hunting needs.
Just my opinion, and food for thought. Carry on & be safe.

Excellent self defense ammo
Review by Chilly
This is a really smart load for 10mm users. Perfect for self defense. Follow up shots quick and easy. You can hit your target twice as fast with follow up shots in a defensive situation as opposed to the heavier, hotter, faster loads. As for the negative reviews...I just don't understand why people think they need bear-busting ammo for protection against humans. Leave the nukes for the big woods animals.

Real world uses
Review by JP
I think this functions and works exactly as it was designed to. I took a Colt Delta Elite in 10mm on a HAM hunt this year. I shot a Javelina at 50 yards using this ammo it dropped the 60lb pig in its tracks. People get too caught up in numbers which don't necessarily translate to performance. When I gutted the pig its lungs were reduced to a chunky goup inside the body cavity. Bottom Line this load worked well for me and performed better than most bullets during expansion testing before the hunt. Is it a heavy recoiling full power load, No. Is it a high performance bullet that expands exactly as it should, yes. I would highly recommend for self defense and hunting purposes. My personal experience and opinion.

This ammo is very watered down. You can get 9mm with as much power. If you want this power level shoot a smaller round.

Good round for anyone
Review by Dryder
Obviously with this load if you want full nuclear 10mm this ain't it but for personal carry or duty it is perfect very accurate and good fast follow-up shots. This round is misunderstood by 10mm enthusiasts who want the hottest load possible so read negative comments first before you decide it's a bad choice cause most bad reviews are from people who want full on 10mm.

People are missing the point.
Review by Matt
This round is doing exactly what Federal designed it to. There are a lot of full power loads and a lot of medium loads, but this round is low power load. This round is designed with rapid, accurate follow shots in mind which are just not possible with full power loads hitting with 650 ft. Lbs.. Don't mistake these for being weak, they're still hitting with over 450 ft. lbs., which is harder than 99% of the 9mm out there and most of the 45. With a gun designed to handle much more powerful rounds, the recoil feels much like a 9mm with the power of a 45 and the capacity of 40. It allows you to get the most out of your gun, 10mm has the power and versatility of a 357 magnum in a large capacity semi automatic.

WAY UNDER-POWERED for a 10mm. Nothing more than a weak 40 S&W round. There are many 40 S&W that have more power than this round. DO NOT BUY!

Weak for a 40 much less a 10mm
Review by Johnny
This stuff doesn't deserve the 10mm name. You can get hotter rounds 40sw. I don't understand what federal is thinking. The reason the 10mm has survived has to do mainly with people who like the power of the cartridge for hunting or people who want greater power than the 357 mag in a normal sized pistol.

not worth it.
Review by matt embry
The ballistics of this round are not very good. Nothing close to what I would expect from a 10mm self defense round. 1030 fps and 425 ft-lbs at the muzzle. I wish I would have had that information before I ordered. I now have some really expensive range ammo.
