Picture a whole bunch of spheres stacked together. Take note of the large gaps separating their forms. Those gaps are dead air!

That geometric reality compelled Winchester to develop the Hex steel shot pellet. True to its name, it is hexagonal (or, to be more accurate, it is a hexahedron because it is a three-dimensional object). Because it’s shaped like little boxes, Hex shot stacks much more close together inside the hull – so much so that this 3-1/2” shell easily contains 1-3/8 ounces of the stuff.

The long hull doesn’t use its capacity only for shot, of course. In addition to a hinged wad column, it contains a gargantuan charge of fast-burning powder, which accelerates the shot to a velocity 550 fps faster than the speed of sound. That’s the max dram performance you need to truly reach out and touch waterfowl!
