Federal put their hat in the mini shotshell market in 2019. The Shorty Shotshell, mind you, is small in stature only. This one ounce rifled slug’s size, muzzle velocity, and energy are each in every way equivalent to what a full-sized shell’s would provide. Have you ever watched those fantastic mink hunting videos online? (If you haven’t, look them up -- but not before you’ve placed your order.) Even though they’re tiny, those minks are absolutely vicious. A Shorty is the mink of shotshells.
Federal advises using a Shorty in a break action or single shot shotgun, but several pump actions on the market can accommodate a 1 3/4 inch shotshell without an issue, and great adaptors are available as well. You’ll have to do your due diligence to determine if your weapon can handle these nifty little slugs. We hope it can, because they’re incredibly convenient to carry around, and their lesser recoil is especially suited for younger shooters who are just wrapping their heads around the sport.
