Steel shot? S’alright. It’ll do the job, but at the end of the day it’s nothing special.

But tungsten shot? Ah, now that’s the Cadillac of shot pellets. Make no mistake: You will pay more for it. But you’ll have the most effective nontoxic waterfowl ammo on the market to show for that investment.

This is Hevi-XII ammunition. The Roman numeral in its name is a nod to what makes its tungsten shot special. Tungsten has a density of 12.0 g/cc – 53.8% denser than steel, which is why it easily delivers twice as much energy at any point downrange compared to a steel pellet of the same size.

Because it packs so much more mass into a smaller shot pellet, tungsten allows you to drop down three shot sizes and still pack equivalent stopping power at the same range as steel. If this shell were loaded with 1-1/8 ounces of #3 steel shot, it would contain around 178 pellets. But because it is loaded with tungsten, it launches a grand total of 245 heavy-hitters!

And it launches them hard. This shell’s 1,450 fps muzzle velocity really moves shot out there in a hurry, so you’ll have that much easier a time snapping the biggest and fastest-flying drakes out of midair.
