As a defensive load, this ammunition fires a one ounce slug at a relatively low velocity of 1,300 feet per second. As one might expect, a low velocity projectile is less powerful than a high velocity one. In a defensive situation, this is not a disadvantage since a heavy slug doesn't need to be moving as fast to reliably incapacitate a human assailant at close range as it does to kill a deer at long range. Moreover, the reduced velocity helps keep recoil to a manageable level so the user can make faster, more accurate follow-up shots. Finally, a lower velocity translates into a somewhat lower risk of collateral damage to bystanders or property.
Each shell in this box of 5 has a 2-3/4" hull length, which is compatible with the vast majority of shotguns. Federal Tactical ammunition is loaded in Anoka, Minnesota.
