Don’t get too hung up on its branding. If you want to use Federal Premium Personal Defense 20 Gauge ammo to harvest deer, or punish coyotes for their crimes against humanity, then so be it. But if you do recruit this ammo for the noblest cause there is – namely, the preservation of you – then you’ll find it has no equal.

If you were to destroy this shell by cutting it open, you would immediately see the three features which suit it so well for defense. Each of the ten #2 buckshot pellets is plated with copper. Its plating hardens the pellet, thus enabling it to stay rounder, pattern tighter, and penetrate deeper. The pellets are also suspended in buffering: supple plastic beads which compress to keep the shot even rounder still. And because the shot column is cradled by a FliteControl – Federal’s highest-tech wad, which erects brake fins to ensure a clean, even break from the shot – you can truly trust most if not all of it to careen into your target.

This shell is loaded with #2 buckshot. It’s a smaller pellet than 00 buck, and therefore reduces (but doesn’t do away with) the risk of over-penetration. Smaller shot pellets also have the potential to deliver a thicker pattern, not to mention punch out more wound channels.
