There was a real crisis at the farm last fall. The old apple tree had produced a bumper crop, but Ma didn’t have time to bake enough apple pies and can enough applesauce to use it all up. She was getting all torn up about it.

That’s when Pa stepped forward. “Don’t you worry, Ma,” he said, consolingly. “I’ll make sure none of these here apples go to waste.”

“You will?” said Ma, wiping away her tears. “But how?”

“Simple,” said Pa. “I’ll just shoot ‘em all with my 22 LR rifle.”

Pa grabbed his trusty 10/22 and a couple boxes of Federal American Eagle and got straight to work. Pop! Pop! Pop! Just like that, he picked off three apples Ma would never have to fret about again.

“These here 40 grain lead round nose bullets really do the trick!” said Pa as he continued blasting. “I like their supersonic muzzle velocity, flat trajectory, and reliable functionality in this here semi-automatic. But I’m sure they’d work real dandy in other kinds of firearms, too!”

“Good job, Pa!” said Ma. “But what’ll you do if raccoons come to eat the apple remnants later tonight?”

Pa just laughed and started reloading his magazine. “Don’t you worry about that, Ma,” he answered. “I think I’ve got just the solution, right here.”
