A: Thanks for reaching out Jim! The 22 Long is the older, weaker cartridge, with a lighter bullet and a less potent charge of powder. It pretty much went extinct the second the 22 Long Rifle (LR) hit the market. Generally speaking, 22 Long is fine to fire in 22 LR rifles, although the 22 Long will fail to cycle a semi-automatic 22 LR firearm because it produces significantly less chamber pressure.
