If you’re still reading, then congrats. You are a champion. And your reward is the perfect American-made 22 LR for plinking, more serious breeds of target shooting, and maybe taking a few potshots at squirrels before they can gnaw the bark off your camellia bushes.

It’s hard to write a lot of flowery stuff about the 40 grain lead round nose, it being the most basic of all 22 LR projectiles and all. That being said, Federal’s best-in-class manufacturing practices do yield outstandingly consistent LRNs, even for their more economically priced lines of ammo.

This supersonic round’s advertised 0.139 G1 BC embodies the following performance:

50yds: 1,102 fps | 108 ft lbs | 0.0”

Ballistics Test Summary

We wanted to know exactly what happens to a self-defense handgun bullet on impact, so following FBI protocols, we fired five rounds of Federal 40 gr Champion LRN from 10 feet, through four layers of cloth (to simulate clothing), into synthetic ballistic gelatin. The photos below show the bullets recovered from the gelatin after being fired from a S&W 43C pistol. There’s also a high speed video that shows the bullet impacting the gelatin block.
