This round’s 50 grain bullet is the Hornady V-MAX, which was designed and created in Nebraska for exactly one application: varmint hunting. The V-MAX makes a joke out of frontal air resistance thanks to its pointed polymer tip, and also boasts great rotational stability courtesy of its swaged lead core and concentric AMP jacket. Once th 50 grain .22 cal V-MAX achieves a muzzle velocity of 3,200 fps, its 0.242 G1 ballistic coefficient lets it streak to 200 yards without having to rise higher than 2.25” above the barrel.
The V-MAX gets real nasty once it collides with a small game animal. Its polymer tip builds up momentum as it drives inward, and instantly triggers ruinous fragmentation when it slams into the base of the core’s precision-formed nose cavity. The V-MAX reliably undergoes terminal expansion at velocities as low as 1,600 fps, which places this round’s effective range at approximately 465 yards.
