Hornady Superformance – WOW! This cartridge’s special propellant charge enhances its muzzle velocity to 2,940 fps (as opposed to 2,900 fps, which is normal for Hornady’s other 30-06 165 grain loads), which translates to almost 50 ft lbs stronger striking energy at 500 yards. And the best part? No extra chamber pressure, recoil, or fouling!
The Copper alloy eXpanding bullet certainly doesn’t squander this round’s potential. The monolithic (i.e. lead-free) bullet uses Hornady’s patented Heat Shield tip to overcome aerodynamic heating without forfeiting its low-drag DVRT flat tip in exchange, so it slips through the air efficiently enough to pull these kinds of numbers (0.440 G1 BC; 24” test barrel):
0yds: 2,940 fps | 3,167 ft lbs | -1.50”
100yds: 2,728 fps | 2,726 ft lbs | 4.0”
200yds: 2,525 fps | 2,336 ft lbs | 4.7”
300yds: 2,331 fps | 1,992 ft lbs | 0.0”
400yds: 2,146 fps | 1,688 ft lbs | -11.1”
500yds: 1,970 fps | 1,422 ft lbs | -29.8”
600yds: 1,802 fps | 1,190 ft lbs | -57.5”
The CX’s closing act is the deer’s least favorite. The hard, long-tailed Heat Shield wedges inside of the nose cavity on impact, thus driving out mortal expansion. At the same time, the CX’s ductile copper alloy construction ensures no more than 5% weight loss resulting from fragmentation.
