Suppressors … on lever-action rifles. They’re all the rage these days, and the big American ammo manufacturers have officially taken note. Need proof? Then here’s exhibit A: the perfect subsonic 30-30 Winchester ammo for hunting hogs, predators, and any other small game that looks at you funny.

Federal’s Fusion bullet is a bonded soft point. Its copper jacket and lead core are electrochemically joined to one another, and sturdy enough to stay mostly intact as the bullet penetrates more deeply. The bullet expands as well, though not energetically enough to ethically harvest whitetail in this instance.

The big selling point here is that 1,000 fps muzzle velocity. It’s ~125 lower than the speed of sound, which is why ignition’s not accompanied by a small sonic boom. That creates optimal conditions for suppressor functionality. It also generates noticeably gentler recoil.

One thing a subsonic muzzle velocity doesn’t do is flatten trajectory or transport very much energy downrange. If (A) sight height = 1.5” and (B) zero = 50 yards, ∴ (C) striking energy = 354 ft lbs and (D) drop at 100 yards = -7.8”.
