This is self-defense ammunition, albeit not the kind that you would necessarily want for neutralizing a human threat. According to Buffalo Bore, this 32 H&R Magnum +P cartridge is capable of penetrating flesh and bone to a depth of 3 feet. That means it is nearly certain to over-penetrate a conventional threat, but should easily pierce a large bear’s thick skull.
The overpressure cartridge accelerates its 130 grain bullet to a higher-than-normal muzzle velocity. Buffalo Bore recorded the following velocities using real revolvers:
• USFA Sparrow Hawk (7.5” barrel) - 1,164 fps
• Ruger Black Hawk (5.5” barrel) - 1,139 fps
• Ruger SP101 (3” barrel) - 1,133 fps
This round doesn’t just owe its deep penetration to its higher striking energy. As a hard cast (Keith style), its bullet is substantially harder than any solid lead alternative. The bullet resists deformation as it plunges through a dense mass, which helps it focus all of its energy on pressing forward. The bullet is lubricated to ward off lead fouling as well.
This cartridge is loaded with low-flash propellant. Its dim muzzle flash can help you a great deal if you ever have to fire in a low-light situation, as it will not instantly blind you.
