The 32 H&R Magnum may technically be a magnum, but that doesn’t mean it’s the hardest-hitting cartridge out there. Take this Hornady Critical Defense cartridge, for example, which has a muzzle energy of 235 ft lbs (out of a 4” barrel). That’s approximately as powerful as a 9mm 115 grain load … at 100 yards!

But you know what? This round is still a plenty effective selection for defense, because its bullet is designed to make excellent use of however little power is afforded to it. This is the FTX, which contains a polymer Flex Tip inside its nose cavity so as to prevent it from clogging with clothing or other debris. Once the FTX plunges into soft tissue, its supple insert compresses to force fast and wide terminal expansion. The FTX is also a tough bullet: fully capable of piercing to the depth where vital organs lie.

This ammo is loaded with reloadable brass cases (not nickel-plated ones, like Critical Defense label cartridges used to have). Its powder is formulated to produce as little flash as possible, which can be a huge help if you ever have to fire at night. Dull flash will prevent your eyes from switching out of their natural night vision mode!
