In order to find out how different self-defense handgun loads perform, we decided to do some ballistics gelatin testing of our own. The chart below is a compilation of expansion and penetration data for Hornady 175 gr Critical Duty fired from 10 feet, through four layers of fabric (to simulate clothing), using a Glock 27 pistol.
The photo slider provides a close-up view of the bullets we recovered from the gelatin, and the video shows this load entering the gel in extreme slow motion.
The diagrams at the bottom of the page can give you an idea of how this load compares to other .40 S&W (Smith & Wesson) self-defense loads that we tested.
We did a lot more of this ballistic gelatin testing, including over 100 different loads in a variety of calibers, so check out Lucky Gunner Labs for all the details.

I fired it through an HKVP40. It has not had a failures of any kind. Grouping was very good. Recoil, what recoil? Honestly, i'm very surprised how little is written about this caliber / manufacturer / value as a defensive load. I feel confident using it as a home defense solution.

I purchased critical duty because the reviews I read were all very good. In the 50 rounds I fed through my Glock 27 I experienced two failures to feed. This is unacceptable as carry ammunition and a weapon that might have to be used to defend one's life

I had the opportunity to shoot several boxes of this ammo recently and am very pleased. The ammo has a softer recoil than my normal target ammo, even though it is lighter by a mere 5 grains. The ammo appears to shoot more accurately and more cleanly as well. Best of all, the price from LG was great, and the product arrived even earlier than promised. I cannot wait to purchase more!
