Shooters are a thrifty bunch. Know how copper wire was invented? Two shooters tried to pick up a penny at the same time.

If you’re trying to shave as much off of your range ammo budget as you can without sacrificing quality, you can avoid copper nearly altogether. This Champion label 40 S&W ammo by Federal only has copper in its bullet jacket, because its case is made out of pure aluminum.

Federal’s aluminum shell casing is made according to precise tolerances and heat-treated to ensure it extracts without getting stuck in the chamber. Aluminum is a lot lighter than brass too – not to a ridiculous degree, mind you, but you might just notice this box of 50 rounds feels a little lighter than usual. Best of all, without valuable copper inside of it, this round’s case knocks the price tag a little lower. Just remember that aluminum lacks the elasticity of brass, and as such doesn’t return to its original dimensions once fired. You can’t reload this ammunition.

This round has a 180 grain full metal jacket flat nose bullet. It feeds and prevents bore fouling as effectively as any other FMJ, and its flat nose helps it cut a slightly cleaner hole through a sheet of paper. If you hate how round nose bullets quickly turn a target into confetti, you’ll appreciate the neater hole an FMJ FN makes.

This round carries clean burning propellant and a non-corrosive Boxer primer, but again – it’s no good for handloading!
