This round’s bullet flunked out of WeightWatchers. It’s a robust 300 grains in weight, which is why it can’t accelerate fast enough to shatter the sound barrier (1,060 fps muzzle velocity, 0.318 G1 BC out of a 20” test barrel). That’s precisely the performance you want when you’re trying to stay quiet, though! And if you’ve screwed a .40 cal suppressor to the business end of your 400 LGND rifle, then you’re really in for a quiet ride.
This round’s bullet is also an open tip. Looks like a hunting bullet – but it ain’t. The open tip’s signature feature merely allowed Winchester to inject molten lead into the jacket so it could cool to form a rotationally stable lead core. Zero terminal expansion to speak of. But thanks to its fully jacketed base, the open tip is going to keep your rifle and its suppressor a whole heckuva lot cleaner.
